I've always believed Dreami is amazing and yesterday you proved it.
I was getting ready for bed at midnight when Dreami went offline. I found that to be weird, so I checked the log files and was quite happy with why Dreami went offline. Why would I be happy that my site went down? Because more people were sending messages to Dreami at the same second than we had ever had in the past with other usage peaks, causing it to crash.
We built it so 4 people at the same exact second could send a message to Dreami, well, that and along with everything else was exceeded. It took fifteen minutes to get back up online, but we made it support too many concurrent users causing certain aspects to be slightly sluggish, so we o 32 people in one second sending messages to Dreami.
The Real Bottleneck
Let's be clear people can come to the site in hordes, that wasn't a problem, the amount of people in the same exact second sending messages was the bottleneck, which we have now moved to 32 people at the same time, but we aren't worried because we can support much higher than that, if need be. You may ask why we don't support higher by default and the answer is, it takes up more RAM than is currently needed and we want to be able to use RAM for other things.
The startup reality: A server crashing for a startup is great, since it means more users than expected were actively using it. What is most important is being able to understand what happened and scale your systems so it is more resilient against that specific issue in the future.
Why This Actually Made Me Happy
When you hear "server crashed," you might think "this site must suck." When I hear "startup server crashed temporarily," I hear "woah, people are interested in this site." Startups always have their servers go down when there's an unexpected amount of people using it.
